History and the love of Facebook

Facebook is a worldwide form of social media. Founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Oskovitz, and Chris Hughes. It was previously known as “TheFacebook.com”

Facebook started on Harvard’s campus and gained 1200 Harvard students after 24 hours of being launched. It now has over 2.7 worldwide users and is continuing to grow.

The original idea was for Facebook to be a social-networking tool that would be established on every college campus. This would help college kids get more connections and help them in the future but also throughout their college career. In 2005, there were over 30,000 organizations from colleges to government employees using Facebook. It had become a very big company, but that was just the beginning. In 2006, they added a feature called News Feed which was what lets you post a status and lets your friends and followers see your statuses. From 2006-2007 they gained users by 89% which was huge for the company making its value increase.

In 2007, It was announced that Facebook would become an open network for everyone to use. This was the best business move the company could have taken. Facebook become one of the most used social media sites in the world. Now people from around the world can connect and long-lost friends and family can search up a name and the possibility of them finding the person they are looking for is very high.

Facebook has done many things for communications and networking over the years. They have also made it easier and more convenient for people to have access to Facebook. They have an app and also a messenger app that is separate from the Facebook. Some of the features that have been created over the years include Live, Stories, Buttons to react to posts, etc. which have made it easier for people to connect.

Facebook has become so influential that they also bought WhatsApp and Instagram. WhatsApp is another app that helps you communicate with family, it’s especially useful for families that are countries apart. Another aspect that makes them convenient is being connected with very big social media brands.

One downfall of Facebook is security because there have been past concerns with privacy. They also allow news articles that might be sharing fake news. They have installed a fact-checker which is supposed to help with accountability and to make sure that people aren’t spreading something that is not real.

For me, I have been using Facebook since I was 10 years old, so I’ve seen it evolve. It’s pretty cool seeing new features being added every day. I definitely use Facebook a lot for my friends from home and also for my family.

Privacy and Ted Talks: Blog 9

Ted Talks As I listened to various ted talks about privacy, I learned all the ways the government is tracking our every move. I was not that shocked because at this point we have trackers in our phone, and don't get me started on the Cover Tracker that just magically appeared one day. Two of the talks that stuck with me were Juan Enriquez's "Your online life, permanent as a tattoo" and Darieth Chisolm's "How revenge porn turns your life upside down." They both were interesting and explained well what social media or pictures do to your life.  Juan talked about how what you post online can send a message just like a tattoo does. Darieth spoke on her experience with revenge porn and how much it effected her life. How it changed the way she saw media and what people can do just to get revenge. How do I feel There are many things that I wish I would have never shared online or with my electronic devices. I think that we have no privacy and that it will not

First Amendment, what is okay and what is not: Blog 3

Peaceful Protests and Black Lives Matter   Throughout the last few months there have been more than 2,000 protests all around the world trying to bring awareness towards the black community and police brutality.   Following the murder of George Floyd, the Black Lives Matter movement has seen many peaceful protests. The first amendment gives you freedom of speech, and the freedom to assemble. Under the U.S. constitution as long as you have a permit and the protest is peaceful then you can go out in the streets and use two of your freedoms.   The problem that has occurred is that many of these peaceful protests have become violent and have involved looting. This has strike controversy among many people regardless of their party. Whether you believe that the looting was justified or not, or if the peaceful protests were not the same with the violent protests under the first amendment the violent protests are not protected.   I think many people have decided to associate the BLM protests w
