The Progessive Era: Blog 4

Have we changed?

When it comes to the 21st century, we often like to consider ourselves different from history. In many ways we are different, new technology, more rights, but one thing that hasn't changed is shutting down the perspective of those that might disagree with the latest status quo.

Progressive Era

During the Progressive era, America was going through WWI. This was a time when many people went off to war and never questioned it, or so we think. There actually were voices of citizens who thought the war was the last thing the U.S should be doing. These particular people believed the U.S should have stayed out of other countries problems and focus on the issues they already had.

Many of those same people that voiced their opinions were bashed and thrown in jail because they were talking down on the war and the government's decisions. Freedom of speech and freedom of the press seemed to not apply here. They were told that they weren't allowed to speak badly of the government during wartime.

Now

We see what is shown to us on the news. Sometimes what is shown through media isn't exactly what's happening or the bigger picture is washed down. It would be a lie if we were to think that the government doesn't control mainstream media.

My opinion comes from reading Anti-War voices that have never been displayed for the world to see. They have valid information and even evidence that you won't see on your Twitter or news channel. This makes me think that the government is hiding things from us or something more is going on with our troops in foreign territory. We can see what exposing has done, search up Julian Assange.

Julian Assange, Wiki Leaks founder

The reason why they these type of voices are not heard without multiple searches is that the government has an agenda and doesn't want citizens to think twice about what's going on around the world when it comes to our troops or with anything that could involve America. These Anti-War journalists are also seen has crazy conspiracy theorist. People think that their arguments are too bizarre or extreme. To be completely honest sometimes I think our people forget that the government lies and covers so many things up, so for them to not even consider for a second what these voices have to say shows how brain-washed we might be.

My second reasoning for these voices not being heard would have to be the lack of popularity. Sometimes things might not be what society accepts but will become popular enough to speak on and become a topic of discussion on all media platforms. Other times, as we've seen in class topics go unheard of until someone decides to bring it up. I think that everything is based on popularity and bias.

In Conclusion, many things are hidden for a reason. It's not random. The media, the government, it's all part of an agenda that we don't quite know yet.

The Supreme Court The Supreme Court is apart of the judicial branch. As you can probably tell since it does Supreme, they are the highest federal court for our nation. They make sure that laws are being practiced and that everything that goes on in court cases and new laws is constitutional. They also have the power to check the other two branches to make sure they aren't going overboard. The Supreme Court has 9 justices, who are the people that help make decisions and make sure the other two branches in the government are being constitutional when making laws or when people want to know if something is within their rights or not. My 5 top sources for news and information  When I was looking over my top 5 news sources from last semester, I thought my sources wouldn't change but it turns out I use many different outlets to receive my news. I found that so interesting because that was last semester, it goes to show that a lot can change in a course of 6 months. CNN  While CNN leans it's biased towards a liberal standpoint, when I need to see what's going on they are the ones that usually pop on. When I search for anything news-related, they are also the ones at the top of my search list. Something that also makes me automatically look at them for news is the fact that they also have a Spanish channel. I would say they are reliable but would also suggest looking at other news sources just so it isn't as biased and you get to see the whole picture. https://www.cnn.com The Washington Post When I need to look at anything that relates to the president or congress, I always go see what "The Washingt...
