The Progessive Era: Blog 4

Have we changed?

When it comes to the 21st century, we often like to consider ourselves different from history. In many ways we are different, new technology, more rights, but one thing that hasn't changed is shutting down the perspective of those that might disagree with the latest status quo.

Progressive Era

During the Progressive era, America was going through WWI. This was a time when many people went off to war and never questioned it, or so we think. There actually were voices of citizens who thought the war was the last thing the U.S should be doing. These particular people believed the U.S should have stayed out of other countries problems and focus on the issues they already had.

Many of those same people that voiced their opinions were bashed and thrown in jail because they were talking down on the war and the government's decisions. Freedom of speech and freedom of the press seemed to not apply here. They were told that they weren't allowed to speak badly of the government during wartime.

Now

We see what is shown to us on the news. Sometimes what is shown through media isn't exactly what's happening or the bigger picture is washed down. It would be a lie if we were to think that the government doesn't control mainstream media.

My opinion comes from reading Anti-War voices that have never been displayed for the world to see. They have valid information and even evidence that you won't see on your Twitter or news channel. This makes me think that the government is hiding things from us or something more is going on with our troops in foreign territory. We can see what exposing has done, search up Julian Assange.

Julian Assange, Wiki Leaks founder

The reason why they these type of voices are not heard without multiple searches is that the government has an agenda and doesn't want citizens to think twice about what's going on around the world when it comes to our troops or with anything that could involve America. These Anti-War journalists are also seen has crazy conspiracy theorist. People think that their arguments are too bizarre or extreme. To be completely honest sometimes I think our people forget that the government lies and covers so many things up, so for them to not even consider for a second what these voices have to say shows how brain-washed we might be.

My second reasoning for these voices not being heard would have to be the lack of popularity. Sometimes things might not be what society accepts but will become popular enough to speak on and become a topic of discussion on all media platforms. Other times, as we've seen in class topics go unheard of until someone decides to bring it up. I think that everything is based on popularity and bias.

In Conclusion, many things are hidden for a reason. It's not random. The media, the government, it's all part of an agenda that we don't quite know yet.

Privacy and Ted Talks: Blog 9

Ted Talks As I listened to various ted talks about privacy, I learned all the ways the government is tracking our every move. I was not that shocked because at this point we have trackers in our phone, and don't get me started on the Cover Tracker that just magically appeared one day. Two of the talks that stuck with me were Juan Enriquez's "Your online life, permanent as a tattoo" and Darieth Chisolm's "How revenge porn turns your life upside down." They both were interesting and explained well what social media or pictures do to your life.  Juan talked about how what you post online can send a message just like a tattoo does. Darieth spoke on her experience with revenge porn and how much it effected her life. How it changed the way she saw media and what people can do just to get revenge. How do I feel There are many things that I wish I would have never shared online or with my electronic devices. I think that we have no privacy and that it will not

First Amendment, what is okay and what is not: Blog 3

Peaceful Protests and Black Lives Matter   Throughout the last few months there have been more than 2,000 protests all around the world trying to bring awareness towards the black community and police brutality.   Following the murder of George Floyd, the Black Lives Matter movement has seen many peaceful protests. The first amendment gives you freedom of speech, and the freedom to assemble. Under the U.S. constitution as long as you have a permit and the protest is peaceful then you can go out in the streets and use two of your freedoms.   The problem that has occurred is that many of these peaceful protests have become violent and have involved looting. This has strike controversy among many people regardless of their party. Whether you believe that the looting was justified or not, or if the peaceful protests were not the same with the violent protests under the first amendment the violent protests are not protected.   I think many people have decided to associate the BLM protests w
