Eight Values of Free Expression: Blog 5

Free Expression

There are eight values of Free Expression, each freedom is unique but also comes together to paint a better picture when it comes to our diversity and what we say and how we express it. Below are the eight freedoms and how I interpret it.

1. Marketplace of Ideas- Suggested by John Milton, believes that the truth will always win against lies. There should not be a license needed to print/publish.

2. Participation in Self-Government- Citizens should be informed about everything that a political candidate has to offer. There should be no restrictions.

3. Stable Change- People should be allowed to speak or "vent" if we want to see less violence. It also helps the government keep an eye on particular groups that are subject to violence or considered dangerous.

4. Individual Self-Fulfillment- Humans can find themselves by having free speech.

5. Check on Governmental Power- The Press is allowed to write about the government abusing their power. This in return can help the country when it comes down to who they want to vote for.

6. Promote Tolerance- The reason for hate speech being acceptable by the first amendment is to create a tolerance for it but also realize that some things are bad to say and comprehend why it's bad.

7. Promote Innovation- Citizens with free speech are more likely to be "energized, creative, etc.'' They are also more diverse.

8. Protect Dissent- This freedom gives you the right to have a mind of your own and have your own opinions even if it means being a minority because of it.

The first freedom that I want to go into more detail is the freedom of Protect Dissent. I can relate to this freedom because there are many topics in which my ideas fall into the minority category or sometimes the majority. For instance, when it comes to abortions, I am pro-life. This generation though is more likely to believe in Pro-choice, so I fall into the minority on the views of this topic. Another example would be BLM, here I fall into the majority of the American people who support the BLM movement. Even though I might be a part of the majority there is still a minority that believes all lives matter. Although this can cause division like we are seeing now in the media and our country I also see why it is important to have different views because we've all had different experiences and we have free will.

The second freedom that I think I can connect with is Promote Innovation. This freedom allows people to express themselves which in returns lets them be more creative. It also allows them to be able to have change and good change because they know what they want and will be more passionate. This is such a great asset to have in a society because it makes change and helps them see that change is not bad. I think of myself as being someone very passionate and very open to my ideas.

My 5 top sources for news and information  When I was looking over my top 5 news sources from last semester, I thought my sources wouldn't change but it turns out I use many different outlets to receive my news. I found that so interesting because that was last semester, it goes to show that a lot can change in a course of 6 months. CNN  While CNN leans it's biased towards a liberal standpoint, when I need to see what's going on they are the ones that usually pop on. When I search for anything news-related, they are also the ones at the top of my search list. Something that also makes me automatically look at them for news is the fact that they also have a Spanish channel. I would say they are reliable but would also suggest looking at other news sources just so it isn't as biased and you get to see the whole picture. https://www.cnn.com The Washington Post When I need to look at anything that relates to the president or congress, I always go see what "The Washingt...

Diffusion of Innovation: Blog 8

Electronic Pay, and the Diffusion of Innovations Theory. Taken by Dr. Dean Smith The Diffusion of Innovations is used to define how change has been made by technological advancements and how it has influenced our society for the past, present, and future. Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and other forms of NFC payment have been extremely crucial in how conveniently we use our debit and credit cards to pay for everyday items. This, among many other factors, is why innovators have worked tirelessly to continue to advance our contactless pay method. Also, with technology in other areas continuing to advance, many investors, businesses, and other entities have been more than willing to support the continuing advancements of contactless pay using Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and other forms of NFC pay. Card reader companies, such as Verifone, implemented the ability to accept NFC payment on their readers. Because of this very limited and new field of how we pay, Verifone became the early adopters of this...

First Amendment, what is okay and what is not: Blog 3

Peaceful Protests and Black Lives Matter   Throughout the last few months there have been more than 2,000 protests all around the world trying to bring awareness towards the black community and police brutality.   Following the murder of George Floyd, the Black Lives Matter movement has seen many peaceful protests. The first amendment gives you freedom of speech, and the freedom to assemble. Under the U.S. constitution as long as you have a permit and the protest is peaceful then you can go out in the streets and use two of your freedoms.   The problem that has occurred is that many of these peaceful protests have become violent and have involved looting. This has strike controversy among many people regardless of their party. Whether you believe that the looting was justified or not, or if the peaceful protests were not the same with the violent protests under the first amendment the violent protests are not protected.   I think many people have decided to asso...
